DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Foreign is a vignette of lives whose stories are otherwise untold. It is an observation to find something spiritual in the mundane.
Life is anything but binary. When making this film, I was constantly asking - could we feel free when confined, lonely when surrounded by people, neglected yet loved? Could we be nostalgic and wonder about the future at the same time? Foreign is my attempt at evoking these feelings.
The visuals of the film were planned meticulously to be observational and restrained. Because we were working with non-actors, I wanted to tell a story not just through dialogues but through behavior, body language and silences. A Haiku, if you will. Allowing the characters a space to be themselves and minimizing the presence of a camera was therefore crucial although challenging.
The soundscape in the film is an integral part of the narrative fabric and therefore very plush - finding music in the rhythm of the sounds of daily life that usually go unnoticed.
